In the Deux-Sèvres region of western France a bucolic way of life is overthrown by the start of World War I. With all the young men at the front, how will the widowed Hortense run her farm? Quite well it seems, but home visits by the men prove subtly disruptive. An occasional telegram brings tragedy. But the biggest upheaval is the arrival of the Americans.
