Captain Charles proposes marriage to Pauline and then heads off to the Napoleonic wars. He does not write, so sister Elizabeth forges ardent letters to console Pauline. Then the captain shows up! Not as a hero but as ‘Gregoire’, a drunken deserter. Somehow Elizabeth and Gregoire turn the situation to his advantage.
